It is the first detecting and acting fire protection system. it is basically a fire water network provided inside the occupancy duly provided with thermal sensitive fusible elements.
It can work in absence of man power and at any time. it provides detection &protection in otherwise unapproachable area also.
Automatic sprinkler protection is a facility designed to discharge water automatically in sufficient density to control or extinguish a fire in its early stages. it consists of water discharge devices or piping to distribute and convey water to the sprinkler and auxiliary equipment such as alarms and supervisory devices. The temperature rise during a fire activates the sprinkler heads which discharge a controlled spray of water over the protected area.
Sprinkler system apart from controlling and extinguishing fires also give out an alarm and alerts people to take suitable action to tackle the fire.
Every sprinkler installation is tailor made to suit various factors such as future of building constructions dimension of the occupancy the possible type of fire etc. most of the blocks in power plant come under ordinary hazard category in general. The pump size in decided on the basis of highest water demand for a particularly isolated object block or group of them.
Water from the source of supply is conveyed to the sprinklers through a network of pipelines. The piping from the installation control valve up to the sprinklers has to be hydraulically designed with due selection of proper pipe sizes.
At started earlier head is a heat actuated device. When its heat sensitive element reaches a specific temperature it opens up and released water as a spray. The pattern of the spray depends on design of deflector. Main stop valve is a check valve which is normally in the closed position. when the system is activated the clack lift up and lets water out through the sprinkler and simultaneously a small quantity of water is bypassed to a turbine wheel connected to a gong which gives alarm.
In power plant sprinkler installation is recommended for cable gallery and coal handling plant. however water spray system is becoming more popular because of its better effective operation and reliability.
